The book is fabulous.written on a background of Dutch Jewish history, it hearkens back to the heyday of early stock-market frenzy that followed Tulip mania. [2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-10 Summary: Good old-fashioned cakes and treats ... This is a great cookbook for sweet treats made from scratch. There is a lot of instruction in the book, including sections that describe different baking pans, techniques, tools, etc. Each recipe is easy to follow and very specific for everything needed, even down to exactly how to prepare your pan. The recipes are great and bring to mind old-fashioned home baking from another era instead of the present-day quick mix craze. Of course that means that the recipes take a little more time to make, but are definitely worth ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-24 Summary: make sure you read the hints! ... I have enjoyed this book and have been practicing with the various scone recipes of late. What's interesting is that each of the scone recipes uses a different techniques -- one uses cubes of butter and a stand mixer and another shaves the chilled butter and mixes it in by hand, for example. I have followed the recipes exactly, but have also used the techniques interchangeably with great result. (Unlike most people, I tend to overwork dough when I do things by hand, so the mixer or food processor methods are much better ...more

[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-04-05 Summary: A fabulous treat for those in love with breakfast pastries ... I admit it; I could happily live on breakfast alone. More specifically, luscious quick breads, muffins, and pastries. I have over two dozen baking books, but I still enjoy seeking out new recipes for pound cakes, quick breads, and international pastries such as danishes, croissants, and strudels. I bought Carole Walter's "Great Coffee Cakes" while on vacation in Petoskey, MI (if you happen to be in town, check out the divine kitchen store Cutler's, where I purchased this). The first recipe I tried was the sticky buns, ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-16 Summary: GOOD INFORMATION. MAINLY ABOUT SPECIALTY COFFEE ... 02-13-2010 This review was revised. I frequently use this book as a reference. There is lots of info on buying, roasting, grinding, etc. Excellent read for for the specialty coffee enthusiast. There are some good illustrations, but the emphasis is on information. The book mainly deals with the people who only want fresh ground beans. That's OK, but I wish he had also included info for the many people to whom coffee is simply a part of life, i.e., a pick-me-up @ McDonalds on the way to work or a big pot when guests ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-04-24 Summary: A fun education of the coffee world ... I have been getting more and more into coffee and espresso drinks in recent years. I've finally started going more specialty coffee as I won't even drink supermarket coffee any more. Once I started wanting to know more about coffee, I found this book at a used book store. I've been reading it off and on for a while. It is a plethora of coffee information. If you are a relative newbie, this book will give you basic knowledge of almost every aspect of the world of coffee, from its growth and harvesting to making your ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-04-10 Summary: Coffee, Coffee and More Coffee ... "The Joy of Coffee" by Corby Kummer, © 1995, 1997, 2003 This is a rather amazing book. Mr. Kummer starts with the growing of the coffee bean, harvesting, and ends up describing the selection of the various beans for blends. The truly interesting part is that there end up being so many beans that are usable, or maybe that is just my reading of it. The beans are so variable coming off the tree, and the processing is so intricate, I was surprised that we actually got some coffee. Another thought was the need for exporting ...more

[2] ... Review | If coffee from a can or jar is your idea of purgatory, The Joy of Coffee is the book for you. Its author, Corby Kummer, originally came to the subject of coffee while writing a series of articles for the Atlantic Monthly , and he found so much to say about the bean that he decided to write a book. Kummer began with some basic questions: "What matters most in buying coffee? How can you sort through the jumble of place names and whimsical labels on beans and blends? Is a dark roast better, more sophisticated,...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-05-11 Summary: Pure Genius! ... I have never written a review of anything, but Paul Madonna's "All Over Coffee" is so brilliant, I can't not write one. "All Over Coffee" is not just a comic that appears in the SFC, or, maybe, to some, that's all it is. But if you take the time to look at each drawing and really reflect on it, the drawing and accompanying text will likely become so much more. Some drawings and textss are simply windows into poignant moments, but others are so startling and arresting that reading them will make you stop what you are ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-01-06 Summary: beautiful, serene, wise ... Paul Madonna's book is delightfully quirky, in an inoffensive yet bitingly honest way. I read the whole thing through in one sitting, enjoying the detailed (yet almost sloppy) pen and ink drawings. I am thoroughly bored and very, very unimpressed with the comics page in my local newspaper. Besides a small handful (RIP Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side . . . you are missed dearly) they are tedious, repetitive, and uninspiring. All Over Coffee is the opposite. Every scene is delicious; perfectly composed and rendered with ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-02 Summary: Adventures of the Spirit and Eye ... I love this book! Madonna is superb illustrator with a mischievous wit and Zen spirit. A native San Franciscan, the Victorian and other architectural details of the old neighborhoods are familar to me, and it is fun to determine locations of his panels. He forces us to be aware of similar details of our lives, of the juxtapositions of form and space, and in but a few words, like a haiku, he captures relationships, moods, and the human condition. Even if you are not rooted in The City, this book deserves study, whether ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-08-23 Summary: Maybe You Had to Be There ... I ended up buying this one essentially sight unseen, after seeing a couple of excerpts on the Comics Journal blog. And excerpted is probably not the best way to comprehend this - Madonna's art is stunning from the get-go, and any individual page has a really satisfying (and very 1970's-ish) feel. But as comics, it doesn't ever come together, particularly when read grouped. Madonna's vibe seems to be a captured moment, and having 200 or so captured moments in a row doesn't do anything to increase their impact - if anything, ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-07-08 Summary: A coffee buzz for your eyes! ... I have been a big fan of Paul Madonna's exquisite drawings and thought-provoking captions since All Over Coffee debuted in the SF Chronicle. I left SF nearly 3 years ago and his strip on the web kept me connected to home. The book was very enjoyable because it documents the evolution of the strip, and has forever put to rest the question: "but what does it really mean?" Do you love San Francisco? Do you appreciate finely rendered drawings of unique architecture or everyday things most people overlook? Ever wonder how ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | In February 2004, the San Francisco Chronicle began printing an enigmatic feature called “All Over Coffee.” Almost immediately, letters of love and hate, confusion and praise poured in. Accustomed to the familiar formats of comic strips and cartoons, some readers struggled to understand a creation that seemed to live both within and beyond those boundaries. All Over Coffee blends the timing of comics with the depth of poetry. Artist and writer Paul Madonna has fused art, literature,...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-08 Summary: I'll have a Venti please ... I read this book about a month ago and still cannot stop thinking of it. It is a little shocking to experience the world through our narrator--he is not the most "moral" young man. However, it is quite an adventure to watch him transform, and literally watch the world transform around him. One of the best books I have read. Yet the "love" scenes are pretty intense--and descriptive--and are not for those who might not appreciate a man's point of view of loving-or learning to love--women. I'm ordering the Food of Love ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-05-08 Summary: Savor the flavor ... In 1895, aspiring poet Robert Wallis, having previously been sent down from Oxford, is sitting in a cafe drinking a cup of coffee. Find the coffee not to his liking he complains to the waiter that the "coffee tastes rusty". Thus starts this somewhat bawdy tale of love, voting rights for women and coffee. It shows the many weaknesses of a man who is trying to figure out what is right in life. The descriptive terms for coffee at the begnning of each chapter make you want to pause to make your own cup to savor while reading. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-01-23 Summary: Great read! ... This was a great novel - it was hard to put it down, and was one of the few I've read front to back so quickly. Several interesting story lines that interwove themselves and kept me engaged through the whole read. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The internationally bestselling author of The Wedding Officer delivers a stunning blend of exotic adventure and erotic passion that seduces from the very first page—and intoxicates until the last . . . a novel whose mystery begins with a single coffee bean. A cup of coffee changed Robert Wallis’s life—and a cup of very bad coffee at that. The impoverished poet is offered the last thing a struggling young artiste in fin de siècle England could possibly want: a job. But the job Wallis...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-17 Summary: A Paean to the "Lifer" Waitress ... How do you feel when you walk into a coffee shop or diner and see an older waitress, one who may have done the job for decades? (In this book these waitresses are called "lifers"). Mixed with some maternal nostalgia, perhaps, many of us react with a quiet embarrassment. Our feelings may be tinged with pity and condescension toward, we assume, these uneducated, low-skill workers who are stuck doing back-breaking work for meager pay. In Candacy Taylor's touching, inspiring, and beautifully-photographed book, we learn ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-16 Summary: "She takes care of me" ... Many long years ago, Roadside Magazine ran an a photo essay cleverly entitled "Boy Meets Grill," celebrating the guy at our local diner or coffee shop who flips pancakes, turns out meltingly crisp home fries, and knows how to do when it comes to eggs "sunny side up" and "over easy." But what about the ladies who make our visits so comforting and memorable? A marvelous book has just been published, Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress, by Candacy Taylor. It is marvelous because it is a book of integrity ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-02 Summary: Counter Culture ... Candacy, have given us a studied slice of American culture that has been there for many years but not given much spotlight before this great work. The gifts of these great personalities to American culture are outstanding. They are our moms, sisters, confidants, advisers, comforters, talking partners, servers, giving us a home feeling away from home. Candacy has done a magnificent job in exposing these great lives and great stories to public view. The book from Amazon.com is a must reading for those interested in this ...more

They are part psychiatrist, part grandmother, part friend, and they serve every walk of American life: from the retired and the widowed, to the wounded and the lonely, and from the working class to the wealthy.
